When A Flame Dies

I am become invisible
As I walk among the crowds ~
They do not see me ~

Tell me, if no one sees me
Do I exist ~ am I really here ~
If I fell in the forest
Or on a city street ~
Would anyone see or hear
Or even know ~

I am lost ~ I am a face
In a crowd that knows me not
At all ~ and when my light
Has flickered and died away ~
Will this world be one iota darker ~

These thoughts plague me
Late at night ~ when I am weary
And my strength is
At its lowest ebb ~

Then I rouse myself ~
Blow on the cooling ember
Of my fondest dream ~
And make myself
Believe in me again ~

Author: Melody J Haislip

Born in a small, Illinois log cabin . . . No, that won’t work. The pampered only child of incredibly wealthy parents . . . No, that won’t fly either. Raised by French nuns after her aristocratic parents were beheaded . . . No, that’s been done! Got it: An East Coast transplant to the Pacific Northwest, this notoriously late bloomer began her new life with a new career as a writer and blogger. She has taken to both the new location and the career move like a duck to water. Writing is a new adventure, and our intrepid risk-taker is diving in, feeling right at home and making new friends. Reached for comment, she replied, “Okay, I wrote my bio, now may I Please go out and play?” We expect great, or perhaps merely more coherent, things from this writer. (Okay, that’s a wrap. What a wacko!)

  1. Inspired. Isn’t it funny how that happens? Hope just springs eternal and we just bounce back.

It’s so beautiful how you used that “fell in the forest” seque there. Gave me goose bumps actually.

We have what we need inside don’t we, to carry on, to know that we’re not REALLY invisible.

Love this uplifting piece of writing, very enjoyable Melody.

    • Pete, thank you so much. For reading and enjoying, but mostly for understanding. We always have what we need to carry on, but some days it’s easier than others. Kind comments like these are also very helpful!

  3. Beautifully written. Words created from experience. It is sad we have to experience these happenings. We carry the invisible agony inside and walk alone. The flame dims as we retreat to ponder and gather strength with the passage of time grieving and healing. Yet, from these occurences in our lives can come poignancy and beauty. Others have walked this path before and will come after. Your poem is a comfort to those who think they walk alone.

    • Thank you, Frank, as always. I know I am loved and that I’m never alone, but sometimes, late at night, when the world and my thoughts crowd in, it’s harder to remember. Thanks for being such a good friend!

  4. Melody,

I find as the years pass that I, too, have asked similar questions. Just tonight as I searched the stars for those familiar ones, I paused to ask that pesky question which still plagues me … “Why are we here to begin with?”

The depth of your poem shook me and touched a resonance which attunes me to your soul. Beautiful and stunning as well.

    Love you Sis!

    • Thank you, sis. What I have learned from the comments I’ve received is that we are all much more alike than we are different. We all have hopes and fears, dreams and goals, and we have all faced down those fears in the small hours of the morning.

I’m so happy that it resonated with you, too. Thank you. love you, Theresa

  5. I think you express well here some emotions that I think most people have felt at one time or another. The summation rang particularly clear with me. Well done.

  6. Dani, we all need to be our own best friend and cheering squad. Who else could be so tender with our feelings? Thank you.

  7. And this from a friend:

If you fell in a forest, the Forest would know.
The Earth would know, and the Sky would see.
The trees would whisper, “Who is she?”
And the stars would reply, “Beauty.”

If you fell on the street,
The modern-day monks would eventually find you.
If breath meditative still moved in your lungs,
Those Zen EMTs, who treat all alike,
Would carry you off on a gurney.
You might only wish you were dead.

From the age old question, “if a tree falls…” and yet you go the distance, bringing a moment of transformation to full fruition, allowing a faceless, invisible person to live again, and not merely live, but live to the fullest. beautifully written!
