Mutability

Roaring fire

I watch the way the flame
Changes the wood
The smaller pieces writhe
And twist and then surrender
To their appointed fate

The logs are dry and soon
The fire claims them
From within ~ till
What was once so solid
Has turned to weightless ash

They say that matter cannot
Be created or destroyed
But only changed in nature
Ice to liquid or to gas
Solid flesh to spirit only

What they call science
I call magic ~ I cannot
Think of it in any other way
Perhaps it’s just the language and
Not the logic that divides us

Where you call gravity and fractals
And cats which either live or don’t
All scientific questions
To me they are the stuff of magic
Gifts of a whimsical Universe

Air Water Fire Earth

Earth Air Fire Water

I look up into the
Deep blue vault
Of the heavens
And think of the thin skin
Of the atmosphere
The only thing that
Keeps us from the
Dark cold depths of
Space and instant
Annihilation

I stand at the edge
Of the ancient cliff
Looking down at the
Restless ocean
As it crashes and
Breaks against the
Shore
Another attempt
In its timeless battle
To take back the land

And later still I sit
Gazing into the fire
Basking in its warmth
Thinking of long ago
Days when I was
A child and Summer
Was forever
And love was ever
A shimmering promise
On the edge of my
Horizon

I remember the fields
With the sun on them
The ripening grain
The forever rows of corn
Tasseled and shining
Green as the leaves
On the trees
That surrounded
And sheltered our
Home

Thus I recite my litany
Air Water Fire Earth
And I feel the pull of you
As I feel the effects of
The gravity I cannot see

To me you are the most
Elemental of all
Without whom nothing
Matters
You are the love of
All my lives

I see the remembrance
Within your eyes as well
And peace and love
Enfold us
We have found each other
At last

Phoenix Rising

phoeni11

You left without a word ~
Between one moment
And the next ~
It sounds so trite ~
But it was tragedy
Enough for me ~

It’s strange that you ~
Always so clever
With your words ~
Should be struck dumb
And cowardly by
What you’d done ~

I’m sure that ~
Given time enough ~
You’d try and make
Me see
That it was all for
My own good ~

And all along ~
I knew that it would
End like this ~
That I’d be left alone ~
To weep
Among the ashes ~

Yet from those ashes ~
Like the Phoenix ~
I shall come alive again~
My suffering will end and
I shall rise triumphant ~

I will survive the fire
Can you say the same . . .
