A Lover’s Promise

We lie facing each other
Gazing into each other’s
Eyes and feeling the feeling
Grow until there is danger of
Some kind of cataclysmic event

Will you forget me you ask
Will there come a time when
I am not your first thought
And your last each day and
I am able only to reply that

Ages will pass
The mountains will crumble
And I will turn to dust and
Blow away a thousand times
Before I will forget you

You have my word and
You have my heart and
All the love in it forever

Forever After

284 Antique Shop Window Stock Photos, Pictures & Royalty-Free Images - iStock

The piano ~ on which we used to
Play our famous duets ~ sits in
The window of the antique shop ~
Gathering dust as it waits ~
Hopefully ~ for someone to
Love it and to play it once again ~

I didn’t mean to leave you ~
That was never in my plans ~
But life ~ and death ~ have
A way of happening without
Permission ~ and one day
I was simply gone ~ no chance
To kiss or say a last farewell ~

And you will not remember that
I said these words ~ or that I had
Come by to see that all was well ~
To you it will be just a dream ~
And probably it’s best that way ~

My love I want you to find new love ~
I would not have you walk alone ~
When there is someone out there
Who would make you happy once again ~

There is no jealousy where I
Have gone ~ how can there be
When Love has truly conquered ~
And we can count the passing
Years in billions ~ or not even
Notice them at all ~

The Final Act

space fantasy. star

I’ve heard it said that ~
In the end ~ all death is suicide ~
I didn’t understand then ~
But now perhaps
I begin to comprehend ~

How the pull of where one is ~
Can grow less potent than
The urgent call of where
One wants to be ~
How curiosity can beckon ~

This was never meant
To be forever ~
The spirit cannot be contained
Within this fragile flesh ~
For more than our
Brief moment in the
Flow of time ~

I’m looking forward
to the big adventure ~
Though I confess to
Trepidation ~ when it
Comes to passing
Through the door ~

I guess I’ll see ~

Air Water Fire Earth

Earth Air Fire Water

I look up into the
Deep blue vault
Of the heavens
And think of the thin skin
Of the atmosphere
The only thing that
Keeps us from the
Dark cold depths of
Space and instant
Annihilation

I stand at the edge
Of the ancient cliff
Looking down at the
Restless ocean
As it crashes and
Breaks against the
Shore
Another attempt
In its timeless battle
To take back the land

And later still I sit
Gazing into the fire
Basking in its warmth
Thinking of long ago
Days when I was
A child and Summer
Was forever
And love was ever
A shimmering promise
On the edge of my
Horizon

I remember the fields
With the sun on them
The ripening grain
The forever rows of corn
Tasseled and shining
Green as the leaves
On the trees
That surrounded
And sheltered our
Home

Thus I recite my litany
Air Water Fire Earth
And I feel the pull of you
As I feel the effects of
The gravity I cannot see

To me you are the most
Elemental of all
Without whom nothing
Matters
You are the love of
All my lives

I see the remembrance
Within your eyes as well
And peace and love
Enfold us
We have found each other
At last

To Sandi

sisters

Your face lights up
And your arms
Reach out for me
I see the love
You make no effort
To conceal
And I thank God
For my best friend
And all the ties
That bind us

You are a blessing
In my life
A part of my heart
That beats in a
Different place
That still is
All my own
Just as a part
Of your heart
Beats in mine

I recognized you
The day we met
I would have
Known you
Anywhere
My sister
My dearest
Forever
Friend

The Hardest Lesson

1258315396469090.jpeg mourningA wave of love and
Longing washes over me ~
It’s been so long
Since last I held you
In my arms ~

My world ended
In a moment ~
But that moment
Has gone on forever ~
Though you have not ~

We speak of death
As if it were an entity ~
It is not kind or cruel
As the case may be ~
But only the cessation ~
Of this phase of life ~

The breath is stilled
The heart will beat no more ~
The fleshly envelope
Has given up its
Animating spirit ~

One learns to speak of the
Beloved in the past tense ~
But is it right to say
I ‘loved’ him ~ when I
Love him still ~

The busywork of death
Can be distracting ~
But ritual can take you
Just so far ~

I’ve had to learn
To live without you ~
I’m learning still ~
